Last spring, while painting outdoors with friends, I came across a cluster of irises glowing in the afternoon sun. Light moved across their petals, turning the magenta almost luminous in places and deep and velvety in others. What held my attention most was the dot pattern that speckles each petal. It's a small detail that's easy to miss, but it makes every bloom one of a kind.

Back in the studio, I painted this iris on watercolor paper with a stippling technique. I built up the markings dot by dot so the pattern would feel as delicate and alive as it did in the garden. The slow, patient process mirrored the moment itself: stopping, looking closely and letting the light show me something beautiful.

This card is a reproduction of that original watercolor.
