This bright pink peony watercolor greeting card holds the flower at its fullest. Petal layered on petal, soft enough to look like they'd give under a touch, in a pink so alive it seems to glow off the page.

The story behind the painting

I saw this peony on a walk through the botanical garden in Toronto, and it stopped me completely. It was the color, the softness of the petals, even the scent. I knew right away I wanted to capture it, to paint it exactly as it was.

Back in the studio, I built the petals up in soft layered washes to hold onto that texture, the way each layer of a peony looks like it could bruise if you pressed too hard, and the way the pink deepens toward the center. That softness was the whole point of the painting. This card is a reproduction of that original watercolor.

What a peony says

Peonies have long stood for romance, honor, and good fortune, which makes this an easy card to reach for when you want to wish someone well, a wedding, an anniversary, or simply a season of good things ahead.

Made to be kept

Printed on matte card stock with careful attention to color, so the deep violets and lit magentas hold their depth in print. It has the weight and feel of a small piece of art  many people keep a card like this long after the occasion, propped on a shelf or tucked into a frame.
