Purple | Watercolor Painting of a Purple Iris | greeting Card | 4.25″x 5.5″

It was a spring morning, and I was driving by when the flowers caught my eye. I love backlighting, and the way it fell across those petals made me so happy that I turned around, went back to my studio, and had to paint it.

I built the painting in layers, working deep purples and blues until the color had real richness. The backlighting gives the piece its luminous effect  the petals go almost translucent where the light passes through  and I wanted to hold onto that velvety feeling the purple iris has everywhere else. This card is a reproduction of that original watercolor.
