My watercolor painting of a purple iris captures the flower’s graceful beauty and the way sunlight glows through its delicate petals. Using soft, flowing layers, I build depth and richness in the purples, blues, and hints of gold where the light shines through. The backlighting creates a luminous effect, making the petals almost translucent, while the deep shadows add contrast and drama. Each brushstroke is carefully placed to highlight the flower’s elegant form and the intricate textures of its petals and leaves.
The purple iris is more than just a beautiful bloom—it’s a symbol of wisdom, dignity, and strength. In Tennessee, these flowers grow abundantly in the spring, filling gardens with vibrant color. Nashville is even called “Iris City” because of the flower’s popularity. In 1933, the iris was officially named the Tennessee State Flower, thanks to dedicated fans who admired its beauty and meaning. My painting reflects this rich history, celebrating the iris as both a natural wonder and a symbol of resilience and grace.
The original art is 11.25″ x 16″ and its painted on handmade recycled paper imported from India. The handmade paper is made at a historic factory started by Mahatma Gandhi.
