This sketch is from a picture I took of a vast valley seen from the top of Mount Hood in Oregon. This has been one of the most challenging sketches that I have created.
After laying out the first layer of mountains and the skies, the trees were tricky to draw. I almost gave up and put it away. After two weeks, I re-started it with a fresh approach.
With an HB pencil I carefully sketched the details of the texture of the dense forest. After layering with a darker pencil, I kept darkening the texture and leaving out the highlights, providing the viewer with endless enjoyment and interest. It has a calm, soothing effect. This sketch required an incredible amount of attention to detail.
