Accepting Hardships as Part of the Journey

We often imagine that a “good life” means constant happiness, a lack of hardship, and total control over what happens. And when life throws us curveballs or unexpected challenges, we’re surprised and disheartened, sometimes even feeling like we’re the only ones facing these struggles.

We tend to focus on what’s missing, broken, or challenging in our lives, sometimes to the extent that we forget to acknowledge what is working. The minor victories, the little joys, the areas of ease—these become less visible against the backdrop of our perceived struggles.

The Power of Perspective

What if, instead of expecting life to be smooth, we saw challenges as the default?

When we shift our expectations, we’re less likely to be shocked or discouraged when things don’t go our way. Challenges become less of a surprise and more of a given. And with that shift, we find space to be truly grateful for the things that are going well.

When we take hardships as our new normal, we are no longer ruled by them. Instead, we develop an inner peace that remains steady regardless of what’s happening around us. We become less reactive, more grounded, and ultimately more content with what we have.

So the next time you feel overwhelmed by hardship, pause. Take a deep breath and ask yourself: What is going well right now?
